What a transport protein in the plasma carries at the same time

Long-chain fatty acids do not dissolve in water. Anyone looking for them in the blood therefore finds them not floating free but attached to serum albumin — the protein that makes up about half the total protein mass of the plasma. The same molecule also carries by far the greater part of the zinc travelling in the plasma. Two chemically quite different cargoes, one shared carrier molecule, separate docking sites.

From this point the paths diverge. The fatty acid leaves the bloodstream, is linked with coenzyme A inside the cell, transferred to a second carrier molecule at the outer mitochondrial membrane and broken down in the matrix in steps of two. The ion stays in the circulation or moves into cells, where it is bound to proteins. Both paths are well described in the specialist literature; they touch one another at more points than the clean separation between „mineral“ and „fat“ would suggest.

Biotitring reproduces this path as an editorial factual text. What the European Union has authorised for zinc and the body's handling of fatty acids is a single sentence. It appears verbatim on this page, it is nowhere reworded, and it is kept visibly separate from the descriptive biochemistry around it.

What happens to a fatty acid after it leaves the fat tissue

Six stages between blood plasma and mitochondrial matrix — and the one line the Union Register carries for zinc at this point.

Go to the guide

Six stages, briefly noted

Each row describes a change of location or a chemical conversion. The detailed version sets the reaction equation and the source alongside each stage.

Attached, not dissolved

In plasma the free fatty acid hangs in one of the hydrophobic pockets of albumin. Depending on loading, a single albumin molecule holds several such chains at once.

Passage into the cell

At the cell surface the chain detaches from the carrier and passes the membrane. Membrane-bound binding proteins raise the speed of this step above that of pure diffusion.

Linkage with coenzyme A

An acyl-CoA synthetase attaches coenzyme A to the acid group. The step consumes ATP and leaves AMP together with pyrophosphate — arithmetically two high-energy bonds.

Transfer to carnitine

The inner mitochondrial membrane does not let acyl-CoA through. At the outer membrane, carnitine palmitoyltransferase I exchanges the coenzyme for carnitine.

Exchange back behind the inner membrane

A translocase brings the carnitine ester in, and a second enzyme of the same family reverses the exchange. Only now does the chain lie in the matrix as acyl-CoA.

Breakdown in steps of two

Four reactions repeat until only two-carbon fragments remain. For a C16 chain that is seven cycles and eight fragments.

At which points on this path a metal features

The six stages above manage without zinc, as long as only the carbon chain is considered. As soon as the proteins that pass this chain along are included, the ion appears at three points that can be named cleanly. The following section names two of them and separates them expressly from the authorised claim.

Zinc-alpha-2-glycoprotein: a name from the laboratory

This plasma protein of around 41 kilodaltons owes its name not to a known function but to a finding from the 1960s: it precipitates when zinc salts are added, and in electrophoresis it migrates in the alpha-2 fraction. It is formed in the liver, fat tissue and glandular epithelium, among other places. In the specialist literature it is studied in connection with the mobilisation of fat from adipose tissue. Those studies are the state of research and not an authorised claim; nor are they presented as such here.

The threshold is in a different regulation

The authorised wording names a contribution but no amount. Whether a product may carry this sentence at all is decided by a figure that appears in a different legal act: the nutrition labelling reference value is ten milligrams per day, and a claim about this mineral presupposes at least fifteen per cent of that per portion or per 100 grams — that is, 1.5 milligrams. The documents list both sources separately. The line itself reads: „Zinc contributes to normal fatty acid metabolism“ — Under Regulation (EU) No 432/2012.

Limits this editorial team has set itself

The sentence quoted speaks of a metabolic process. It says nothing about body shape, nothing about weight, nothing about endurance and nothing to the effect that a larger intake would have a greater effect. It is tied to zinc alone and on this website is not drawn together with any further element into a joint statement.

Biotitring publishes text. A product to be taken is not part of the offering, and no source of supply for one appears here.

What the text looks like as a file

This page gives each stage in a few sentences. The file breaks them into sections of their own, sets the reaction equation and enzyme name alongside, and runs to 44 pages — with two table sections, a questions appendix and a short source line for each section.

What happens if the file is not what you expected

For purchases over the internet, German law allows a period of fourteen days in which the contract can be undone without giving a reason. A short message to the mailbox named below is enough; no particular form is prescribed. The amount then goes back by the same route it came in. When the period begins, the model form and the particularities for digital content are set out in full in the Right of Withdrawal.

Health notice

Biotitring is an editorial collection of texts and not an advisory service for the state of health of individual persons. The sections of this page reproduce how biochemistry textbooks present the process described; they contain no diagnosis, no dosage figure and no recommendation to take anything. Where complaints exist, medication is being taken, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding, a question about one's own supply belongs in the hands of a doctor or pharmacist. Food supplements do not take the place of a varied diet and a healthy lifestyle; stated intake amounts must be observed.

Information requests, withdrawal, data protection

This field leads to a single mailbox: research enquiries, order matters and requests for information under Chapter III of the General Data Protection Regulation all land there together. Entries marked with an asterisk are needed so that a message can be matched. The send button hands the entries to the email program set up on this device; the message is only dispatched from there.
